Recent attacks on LGBT people in Russia and new discriminatory laws there have gained attention here and throughout the world. Seattle residents have a long and proud history of activism in pursuit of positive social change locally and around the world.
As a continuation of that work, the Seattle City Council will co-host a forum to explore lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender human rights in Russia and internationally:

Representatives from the World Affairs Council, Social Outreach Seattle, All Out, and the Seattle LGBT, Women's and Human Rights Commissions, and Amnesty International UW will be on hand.
Moderator: Deborah Brandt
Deborah Brandt is an award winning journalist whose career in broadcasting spanned more than 30 years in Texas and Washington state. You may remember her as Morning Edition Host on Seattle’s NPR station KUOW. She retired from broadcasting in 2007. She now records audio books for the blind through the Washington State Talking Book and Braille Library, acts as moderator for local events, participates in theater projects, has obtained a Bachelors Degree in Metaphysical Science and is a newly ordained minister.
Panelist: Joe Mirabella
Joe Mirabella is the Director of Communications at All Out, an organization mobilizing millions of people and their social networks to build a global movement for love and equality. Previous to joining All Out Joe worked at Change.org as a Campaign Manager and volunteered as the Social Media Director for the Referendum 71 campaign to approve Domestic Partnerships. Joe lives with his husband in Seattle.
Panelist: Alejandra Gonza
Alejandra Gonza received her law degree from the National University of Tucumán in her native Argentina and her Masters in European Studies and Human Rights from the Pontific University of Salamanca, Spain. Currently, she serves as a legal adviser to the Due Process of Law Foundation in Washington, DC. Ms. Gonza also represents victims of human rights violations before the Inter-American human rights system. Previously, she served as a senior staff attorney at the Special Rapporteurship for Freedom of Expression at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (both of the Organization of American States).
Panelist: Rachel Denber
Rachel Denber, Deputy Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division, specializes in countries of the former Soviet Union. Previously, Denber directed Human Rights Watch's Moscow office and did field research and advocacy in Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Estonia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. She has authored reports on a wide range of human rights issues throughout the region. Denber earned a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in international relations and a master's degree in political science from Columbia University, where she studied at the Harriman Institute. She speaks Russian and French.
