Lou Henry Hoover finds himself teetering on the brink of failure. Failure to live up to a mountain of masculine promises he made, to himself, to his wife, to his imaginary unborn children. Did Lou set the proverbial chin-up bar too high? In this evening of dance/drag/theater, choreographer and performance artist Ricki Mason employs her drag persona Lou Henry Hoover along with a cast of six Seattle based performers to explore what it may or may not mean to be a good man. Called “hilarious dance magic” by The Stranger, Lou Henry Hoover has become known via the international cabaret circuit for taking what is personal and embarrassing and wrapping it in a deliciously campy candy coating for universal consumption. Expect a tiny man with big feelings, a wife that he barely deserves, a classically disapproving mother-in-law, some creepy twins that probably aren’t real, an acrobatically bouncing baby boy also of questionable actuality, and a second Lou Henry Hoover that’s a cockroach. Ricki Mason is a choreographer and performance artist that combines a decade-long dance career with a deep love of drag to create work that comes straight from the gut, wrapped in deliciously campy candy coating not to obscure the truth, but to hyper-color it. Ricki performs primarily as drag persona Lou Henry Hoover. The Seattle Stranger explains: “this twentysomething woman moves in a way that suggests a late-career soft-shoe hoofer in the Catskills. It’s hilarious dance magic.” Lou performs all over the world, collaborating extensively with his wife Kitten LaRue as Kitten N' Lou, and with Kitten LaRue and BenDeLaCreme as DeLouRue Presents (Homo For The Holidays, FREEDOM FANTASIA, Party Schmarty). Lou most recently returned to Seattle from NYC where he was performing in BenDeLaCreme's off-broadway run of Terminally Delightful. Lou is a member of the internationally celebrated burlesque troupe The Atomic Bombshells and is fast becoming known as a innovative pioneer as a drag king in the field of burlesque, performing at such esteemed events as The New York Burlesque Festival, The New York BOYlesque Festival, The Helsinki Burlesque Festival, and The Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend. Lou Henry Hoover has been supported by The Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, 4Culture, Artist Trust, The Bossak Heilbron Charitable Grant Foundation, and was recognized by Seattle Magazine as a 2010 Spotlight Award Winner for his work with Cherdonna Shinatra. Favorite commissions include The Yard at Martha’s Vineyard, a music video for Stranger Genius Award winning band The Intelligence, and stage choreography for New Orleans Bounce artists Nicky Da B and The “Team Nicky” Bounce All-Stars.
