On May 2014, JAKE (Joyfully Awaken to Knowledge & Empowerment) was born as a simple idea: to share relevant, engaging and thought-provoking ideas that inspire.
JAKE was conceived to spotlight the voices of speakers and thought-leaders who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT) that can intimately speak to the unique cultural experiences we celebrate as a community alongside our allies in an entertaining yet inspiring and accessible format.
In short, we make it easy for speakers to get their message out to audiences at live community events and online.
As we continue onward with our mission of giving a voice to the LGBTQ community, celebrate with us at our first birthday, the JAKE Speakeasy.
While there is no cost to attend the Speakeasy, we invite each of our guests to consider a minimum suggested donation of $25 to help bring powerful, inspiring queer voices to video. Your tax-deductible contribution will go towards the production and taping of the next JAKE Talks in Fall 2015 thanks to our Fiscal Sponsor, Three Dollar Bill Cinema (reflecting diverse communities through queer film and media).
The JAKE Speakeasy will be presented in 1920s prohibition era-style with a queer twist: a roaring atmosphere, hosted bar featuring our classic speakeasy cocktails alongside local beers/wines, light refreshments, and an entertainment/program including:
LIVE DJ SET
*Linden curates selections for your listening pleasure including Electro Swing & Mash-Ups. The house will swing!
*Soul City (Inaugural JAKE Talks Featured Artist) returns to bring their soulful rhythms with a postmodern jukebox twist
*Cherry Sur Bete (Language of Gender Featured Artist) once again will enthrall audiences with an androgynous Victor/Victoria presentation reminiscent of the roaring 20s
*Bradley Esparza delights on piano with modern renditions of Cole Porter's musical genius
FALL 2015 THEME REVEAL
Our audiences who attend our events play a unique part in JAKE as their feedback informs the next installment of JAKE Talks. Learn more about what you as a community told us that is important as we reveal the theme and share how YOU can be a speaker / artist / performer at the Fall Talks.
