We're so excited to welcome a very special guest to MEAT this month! MorriShe is a performance project of Brooklyn-based performance curator and promoter, Earl Dax. While living in Philadelphia in the 1990’s he performed as Enya Buttox: The Drag Queen for Social and Economic Justice. At the same time he worked with an activist group called Grassroot Queers who produced the annual Mr. Drag King Phildelphia contest. Additionally he traveled frequently to New York where the drag king scene was in full swing with weekly shows featuring Murray Hill, Dred, Mo B Dick and others. As a Morrissey faux king, Dax draws on his own performance background while referencing a period when — still in the thrall of theorists like Judith Butler — the performance of gender was enthusiastically explored in queer, urban enclaves around the country and internationally. The gender play is heightened through the choice of Smiths-era Moz, that highly literate, fey, celibate rock and roll icon.
MorriShe has performed at New York city venues including BAM, Joe’s Pub, Abrons Arts Center, The Delancey, Metropolitan and Littlefield. Internationally MorriShe has performed at The Glory (London), La Java (Paris), Monster Ronson’s (Berlin) and Surprise Surprise (Zagreb).
LIVE SHOW @ MIDNIGHT! DJ sets throughout the night from Dee Jay Jack and MorriShe! Expect Post-Punk/New Wave/Dark Disko with plenty of Moz/Smiths peppered in!
