On April 28, The Supreme Court of the United States of America (SCOTUS) heard oral arguments in the case for same-sex marriage in all 50 states.
SCOTUS is expected to rule in late June, however, the exact day IS NOT YET KNOWN so you will have to continually check back here to find out when the ruling is handed down Social Outreach Seattle will have all the details and logistics worked out for the community and our allies to come together and celebrate one of the biggest advances in rights in our lifetime, or, if SCOTUS does not rule in our favor, there will be a need for a unified protest.
Washington state was one of the first states in history to pass a pro-LGBTQ marriage initiative by popular vote. In addition, then-State Senator Ed Murray and his mentor, State Senator Cal Anderson, ceremoniously introduced a marriage equality bill in the legislature for over two decades before LGBTQ Washingtonians secured the right to domestic partnerships, then extended those benefits in 2009 (R-71), and finally marriage in 2012 (R-74). Additionally, Seattle is home to the largest number of same-sex marriages in the nation! In other words we have every right to celebrate this victory should the court rule in our favor!
It is our goal to have over 1,000 people come out to celebrate what we hope becomes known as a monumental day in LGBTQ history! Invite your friends, family, spouse, loved ones, coworkers, ANYBODY and EVERYBODY that supports the community or is a member of the LGBTQ community!
BRING SIGNS, FLAGS, CAMERAS, BALLOONS, dress in Drag if you are a drag queen/king, come decked out in your gayest or brightest festive colors because this will be a PARTY! LIVE music, dancing, concessions and you'll hear from some of the folks that helped secure this win for us here in Washington and beyond! SOSea will reach out to all the existing community organizations and get everyone involved! We're so used to fighting for our rights we sometimes forget to celebrate the victories along the way. NOT THIS TIME! See you in June everyone!
