For this round of Spite House, I'm excited to share two concepts I've been rolling around for the last few months.
The first is a short, two movement piece for percussion quartet. I composed this work to accompany moments of Alice Gosti's upcoming piece 'bodies of water', which takes place on July 16th from 5-10pm on the waterfront. I have been a bit obsessed with woodblocks lately, and this is my first in a series of experimentations.
Alongside composing for woodblocks, I have also been focusing on my piano playing. Specifically being able to develop repetitious patterns in different meters in each hand. Think iso-rhythms, poly-metric cycles, and phasing superimposed over pop chord structures. Lots of repetition, lots of quickly changing relationships, and lots of me stomping a heavy backbeat and maybe trying to sing along.
Be advised, the percussion music can get a bit loud.

Spite House Concerts started in 2013 as a venue for new music. Beloved by Seattle's improvisation communities, the series continues every Tuesday evening. Concert artists are selected by a rotating group of curators, local musicians devoted to finding Seattle's most interesting and unique new music.
The third set is open to improvisers. Audience members are welcome to bring voices and other instruments. After the concert proper (10:30pm or later, depending) we form up spontaneous duos and small ensembles to create a set of impromptu music magic.
$20 Donation encouraged, not required. All donations are accepted with gratitude. We love supporting live, local musicians! Also welcome: donations of food & drink to complement what is always on hand in the kitchen.
