Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek brings an upside-down fairy tale world to the stage. It is a hilarious story of love and friendship that calls into question assumptions about heroes, heroines, and villains. In this colorful comedy, every character steals the show, from the sassy gingerbread man to the cross-dressing wolf. Shrek features a brilliant score that includes I Know it’s Today, Freak Flag and I’m a Believer.
Cast Age Range – 8th grade and up
Recommended Audience Age – 9+
Mildly off-color language (Gingy says ‘bite me’ – I mean, he is a cookie. Or Farquaad, the comically short ruler, rehearsing his intro to his princess in front of a mirror: ‘Farquaad, but you can call me Maximus, as no doubt you will. Woof! No, too smutty.'). Fart jokes, in fact a whole fart duet. Comic violence and torture (Gingy again, with his poor legs bitten off). Cross-dressing and cross-species relationships. Less dark and frightening than Lion King, but the humor is a little more sophisticated.
