Love Stranger Things, and all those great 1980’s movies that inspired it? Join us for three double-feature matinees celebrating those mid-80’s classics that inspired this Summer’s smash-hit Netflix show. This Saturday we hudder to telekinetic terror and paranormal horror with Stephen King’s Fire Starter (1984), and Poltergeist (1982).
From its story of an evil government experiment that gives a little girl deadly telekinetic powers to the synth-heavy soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, Fire Starter may give Duffer Brothers fans some major déjà vu. Based on a novel by Stephen King, the movie stars Drew Barrymore, David Keith, Martin Sheen and George C. Scott. The film is 154 minutes long, and received an R rating owing to lots and lots of people catching fire. “They’re Here” says the little blonde girl in Poltergeist, signaling the invasion of malevolent spirits that turns the Freeling’s suburban home into a terrifying rollercoaster of evil. Starring Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, and with an unforgettable appearance by Julian Beck, the film is 154 minutes long and received a PG rating, somewhat surprising given how truly scary it is.
Our Oct 1 screening features Stand By Me & The Goonies ( http://bit.ly/2cOPFU9 ) and on Oct 30 its political horror as we screen The Dead Zone & They Live, with guest host Ramon Isao. ( http://bit.ly/2cNBsbv )
