Love STRANGER THINGS, and all those great 1980’s movies that inspired it? Join us for three double-feature matinees celebrating those mid-80’s classics that inspired the Duffer Brothers’ smash-hit Netflix show. This Sunday join local horror screenwriter Ramon Isao (Zombies of Mass Destruction, Dead Body) as we experience the terror of Hallowe’en and Election Day with a double bill of politically tinged horror: Stephen King’s The Dead Zone (1983) and John Carpenter’s They Live (1988).
In The Dead Zone, our hero Johnny awakes from a coma to find he can psychically read the secrets and future of anyone he touches, a dread ability that reaches its terrifying climax when he shakes a political candidate’s hand and realizes his coming presidency will lead to a nuclear apocalypse. Directed by David Cronenberg and starring the imitable Chrisopher Walken, Tom Skerrit, Colleen Dewhurst and Martin Sheen, the film received an R rating for brief nudity and violence. In They Live, a nameless drifter finds a pair of sunglasses that reveal young republicans to be ghastly alien invaders bent on destroying the world through global warming. This cult classic dark satire of the Reagan revolution received an R rating for violence, profanity, and brief nudity.
